Batteries are one of the most predictable categories a Ghanaian wholesaler can carry: demand is continuous, the unit is small, and a recognised European brand sells through faster than unbranded stock. The commercial question is rarely whether to stock them — it is how to build an assortment that clears customs cleanly and still leaves margin at every step of the channel.
Build the assortment around rotation, not around SKU count
A first order should concentrate on the sizes that move: AA and AAA alkaline carry the volume, 9V and specialty cells protect the completeness of the shelf, and lithium and rechargeable references lift the average basket in urban electronics retail. Adding depth in slow references before rotation is proven ties up working capital that would be better spent on a second container.
The practical test is simple: every reference in the first order should have a named outlet type behind it. If a size only exists in the order because the catalogue lists it, it belongs in the second shipment, not the first.
Plan the container before you plan the price
- Confirm whether the volume justifies FCL, or whether an LCL consolidation with other brands gives a better landed cost.
- Ask for carton quantities, weights and volumes early — they drive your freight quote and your shelf price.
- Batteries are shipped under specific transport rules; the documentation set has to match the mode of transport.
- Factor Tema clearance lead time into your reorder cycle so the shelf is never empty between shipments.
Price the shelf backwards from the channel
Wholesale margin in this category is built on rotation, not on unit markup. Work backwards from the price the final outlet can defend, subtract the retailer and sub-wholesaler steps, and compare what remains with your landed cost. When the arithmetic is tight, the lever is usually the assortment mix or the shipment mode — rarely the unit purchase price alone.
